Restart Your Browser Every Thursday Morning

Restart your browser every Thursday morning

Your web browser is one of the most frequently updated applications on your computer — and one of the most frequently ignored when it comes to applying those updates.

Browsers update silently in the background, but most of them require a full restart to actually apply the new version. If you never close your browser, you may be running an outdated version for weeks without knowing it — leaving known security vulnerabilities unpatched.

The fix is simple: restart your browser once a week.

Thursday morning is a good choice. By Thursday, most browser vendors have already released patches for vulnerabilities discovered earlier in the week. It is early enough in the week that you are still in a working rhythm, and it takes less than a minute.

How to restart your browser

Do not just close and reopen a window. You need to fully quit the application and relaunch it.

On Windows: Click the three-dot menu then Exit, then reopen from your taskbar or Start menu.

On Mac: Press Command + Q to quit, then reopen from your Dock or Applications folder.

After restarting, check your browser About page to confirm it is running the latest version:

If an update is available, it will install automatically when you restart.

Why this matters

An outdated browser is one of the most common entry points for malware, tracking scripts, and exploits. Keeping it current is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do for your security.

One restart. Once a week. Thursday morning.
